Brea stayed with Myles until the healer came in and forced him to take a sleeping drought, saying it would speed up the healing process. He’d fought it at first, claiming he didn’t want to sleep when he’d just gotten Brea back.

But as he drifted off to sleep, she kissed his forehead, checked on her father as he started to wake, and slipped from the tent in search of something to eat. Her stomach rumbled, reminding her just how long it had been. She’d contemplated falling asleep with Myles, but her hunger had won out.

The sun had almost faded away, and with it, the Eldurian magic in her veins went dormant, leaving only Fargelsian power in its wake. But she was too tired to do the spells even if she could recall the words when her mind was so hazy.

She found Finn and Alona sitting beside a fire with wooden bowls in their laps. They dipped hunks of bread into stew that smelled heavenly.

“Hi.” She didn’t know why she suddenly felt so out of place among these people. Maybe it was the Iskaltians taking up most of camp, or the fact she knew what they all must think of her for marrying Griff.

But not Finn. Good, happy Finn never let her down with his smiles. He glanced up at her, his eyes sparkling. “Brea.” His smile stretched all the way across his face. “Want something to eat? You look far too thin. Did they not feed you in Gelsi?”

“Yes, please. Let’s just say I never trusted the food in Gelsi.”

He set his bowl aside and jumped to his feet. “I’ll be back.”

Brea watched him go before sitting beside Alona. It felt strange to be so openly equal with her. In Fargelsi, they’d always had to act like princess and servant, but here, they were both princesses.

“I’m glad to see you two together.” She elbowed her sister.

Alona’s face reddened. “Oh, we’re not together. Not like that. Finn is my friend. Kind of like Myles is yours.”

Brea snorted. “Myles and I are not like you and Finn. For one, Myles isn’t in love with me.”

“Finn’s not… we can’t… it isn’t…”

Brea grinned. “Stop worrying so much about the future, Lona. What do you want right now in this moment?”

Alona chewed on her lip. “I don’t know.”

“Well, now you’re just lying.”

She released her lip. “You’re right. We don’t know what will happen when we get into Fargelsi. All we have is now.”

“Preach, girl.”

Alona handed her bowl to Brea and got to her feet, brushing a hand down her dress before marching to where Finn walked back toward them, bowl in hand. She stopped in front of him, waiting only a beat before rising up on her toes and pressing her lips to his.

Finn went still for a moment before the bowl fell from his hands, splattering Brea’s dinner across the ground. He wound his arms around Alona’s back and pulled her closer.

Soldiers hooted and hollered, but Brea looked away. She was happy for them, and also jealous of how simple it seemed to be.
